Mitsubishi’s new 149 series of 1080p 120Hz flat lanel LCD HDTVs isdistinguished by their “Integrated Sound Projector”, a built-in 16-speaker surround sound audio system that aims to eliminate the need for separate audio components, wires, or controls, and provide a clutter-free home theater system that is also ideal for secondary home theater rooms such as bedrooms and smaller locations throughout the house where full-blown theater systems may not be practical.

At the same time, the series offers top of the line features like full 1080p, a 120Hz refresh rate with Smoth Film Motion processing, an UltraThin Frame, x.v. and Deep Color, 4 CEC-compatible HDMI ports and a USB port, and Mitsubishi’s exclusive 6-color processor.

The integrated Sound Projector (iSP) reproduces true 5.1 surround sound from a single speaker cabinet attached below the TV screen. The iSP speaker enclosure houses a 16 speaker array that creates a 5.1 channel sound field. Through the use of an advanced algorithm, the iSP delays the sound at varying intervals to each of the 16 speakers. (see diagram) As a result, the speaker array generates 5.1 distinct sound beams that are focused both directly and indirectly to the listener. The subwoofer or LFE channel is also available as an output of the TV for easy connection to an external powered subwoofer.

For consumers who want an HDTV that keeps pace with fast-action movies, sports, and game play, Sony BRAVIA V-Series Flat Panel HDTVs combine Full HD 1080p performance and Motionflow 120Hz technology for an amazing viewing experience. Motionflow 120Hz takes both high-definition and standard programming a step further by increasing sharpness and detail in fast-moving images for more fluid, natural motion. In addition, BRAVIA V-Series HDTVs use proprietary Image Blur Reduction technology to further enhance the picture for even better performance.

The HDTVs also feature BRAVIA Engine 2 technology, which uses exclusive Sony algorithms to reduce visual noise and sharpen and enhance an already-striking dynamic contrast ratio.

Additionally, they include seven versatile HD connections to ensure you get impressive image quality from all your HD components. Take advantage of four HDMI inputs, component and composite inputs, and a PC input, as well as a USB input that lets you play audio files from USB storage devices, or connect a compatible camera to your HDTV for a quick and easy slide show.

Sony knows your home theater set-up doesn’t stop with your HDTV, which is why the BRAVIA V-Series HDTVs are compatible with BRAVIA Link Modules — including the BRAVIA Wireless Link, BRAVIA DVD Link, and BRAVIA Input Link Modules (all sold separately). The HDTVs also support BRAVIA SyncTM technology so you can control all of your compatible devices with a single remote. And all BRAVIA HDTVs exceed ENERGY STAR 3.0 requirements for in-use and stand-by power consumption, meaning you don’t need a lot of power to get a lot of performance.

Reviews by Mako … “I bought this set from a local dealer. I’ve been looking at the new 240Hz sets along with the more common 120Hz. Mitsubishi seems more or less disinterested in the numbers game, as they aren’t emphasizing the refresh rate (120Hz), contrast ratio, or other specs that seem to dominate LCD TV marketing. Although the specs can tell you much about a display, the proof is in the actual viewing experience. That’s where this model really impressed me.

Using the ‘Natural’ display preset actually produces a very natural image in color, contrast and brightness. The color balance is excellent. Color gradients are flawless, with no visible banding. The picture is incredibly sharp - given the right source. This set really shows its quality with Blu-ray video; detail is fantastic and motion is smooth with no visible blurring. This is also true of sports broadcasts in HD.

Mitsubishi emphasizes the integrated surround sound system on their web site. It’s a nice feature if you don’t have a separate surround sound amp. However, if you hope to get the surround effect, take a look at the diagrams in the online version of the owner’s manual. (It’s more complete than the printed one.) Since my room isn’t rectangular, I couldn’t really test the ’sound projection’ capabilities. You can connect and external sub-woofer too, which I did not attempt.

Connectivity is good, with 4 HDMI inputs, and two component/composite inputs. A USB port is a nice feature, as you can connect a flash drive or other storage device, and play back digital files directly. (I haven’t had a chance to test this thoroughly yet.) A digital audio output should come in handy for routing audio back to my surround sound receiver from the antenna input.

The design is understated, with an all black cabinet. The logos aren’t huge, and they don’t light up or anything. I particularly like the narrow (less than 1″) bezel. On the stand, I have just enough room for my center speaker, which is about 4.5″ high, to sit in front of the set. I’m still getting accustomed to the glossy screen, and was a bit wary of it before I made my purchase. My viewing room has a large window opposite the TV, and the reflection is a problem. However, the nature of a matte finish screen tends to reduce the sharpness of the image, so I opted for a better picture.

The remote is ‘activity based’ and capable of controlling other devices through the usual code entry, or via HDMI control of CEC devices. The button array is pretty basic, so you may end up using a different universal remote, or individual remotes. I haven’t programmed the included remote, as I use a Logitech Harmony One instead.

This TV doesn’t have some of the ‘features’ other manufacturers are throwing in these days. But honestly, I don’t need network connectivity, kid’s features or recipes on my TV. The Energy Star rating is another plus, and something that’s becoming fairly common. If you’re looking for a high-quality LCD TV that you’ll enjoy for years, take a look at this unit. I find it to be truly impressive.”

BRAVIA XBR HDTVs have become the benchmark by which all others are measured, and the performance-oriented feature set on the XBR6 series shows why. Exclusive motion and color technologies deliver legendary XBR performance. 10-bit processing and 10-bit displays, x.v.Color technology and Deep Color render a wide color gamut and smooth color transitions.

Motionflow 120Hz and 24p True Cinema provide smoother picture performance with unprocessed 24p film reproduction. XBR6 Series HDTVs include Sony’s innovative DMex technology which “future-proofs” them by creating an expandable platform for connecting to devices that haven’t even been invented yet. Of course, right now they will also connect seamlessly with other Sony products like camcorders, computers, digital cameras, and the interesting new Bravia Internet Video Link. HDMI-CEC compatibility means you can control everything from one remote. They are even DLNA compliant, offer Sony’s unique PhotoTV HD, and include swivel stands.

A bold new design with a color-accented speaker grille complements the gloss black finish, which also hints at the floating glass look of previous XBR models. If you’re looking for some personalization you can purchase an optional speaker grille in multiple colors.
