“I bought this samsung DLP tv refurbished from secondact.com for 799 plus shipping. First impressions were that the picture through my xbox was beautiful (switched from crappy old 36 in sdtv). I can actually read the words on my games now

The second day I realized that I had the problem that a lot of people had. The screen was bowed or pincussioned… not sure which one. If there’s a perfect horizontal line on the screen, when it gets to either the left or right edge it goes up, creating a kind of smile shaped effect. I was immediately beside myself as I had just spent quite a bit of money on this tv.

The tv has a 90 day warranty from samsung so I began by calling their customer support. I called and got through to an easy to understand American representative very quickly and explained my problem. Even though it’s refurbished all i had to do was fax in my receipt and tomorrow I will be calling to set up an appointment for a technician to come directly to my house to fix this problem. I will update this after the tech comes to see what happens but the customer support from samsung was amazing and I love that i don’t have to ship out my tv somewhere and not get it back for a month as other manufacturers might.

If that gets fixed perfectly the only thing wrong with this tv is the audio. If turned up to normal to high-normal listening range it has a definite buzz, which the technician may also fix when he gets here. This isn’t a huge deal to me because for the price i payed i wasn’t looking for great audio without getting outside speakers anyways.

If on a budget this is a great tv to get as i see it!

“I’ve had it for about 2 months now and it is an Awesome TV! My only gripes are that shadows or dark areas of subjects on the screen tend to black out instead of shadow, the other is that is has a lamp instead of LED, but hey, at $999 it still earns 5 stars. Other than that the picture is AMAZING. The TV has a slim bevel which is VERY nice, color is vibrant and very sharp. The TV’s light engine is not noisy at all. High def signals (from Xbox360 or satellite box) looks so incredibly crisp. The TV does not have the bowing issue I have read about. ”

“This TV is absolutely wonderful as you may have noticed from other reviews. I have had this for about 1 year and have had no problems. The fan is so quiet and the picture quality in HD and black levels are great. I have an XBOX 360 hooked up with a component inputs and the games look spectacular. Coupled with an elegant stand, it really makes the living room. One other bonus is the DVI and HDMI inputs for true digital picture and sound from higher end DVD and HD boxes, and input of computers. Surfing the internet on 50″ couldn’t be more fun.

Downsides I would say are the heftiness of moving this TV and sound inputs. Find a good spot and leave it there as it does have a glass bottom for the stand. It could use some digital sound inputs as well such as optical or coaxial.

Other than that all you do is plug it in and go. It looks perfect right out of the box. It does not produce much heat at all which is also a benefit if you have it in a smaller room with many other a/v products attached.

This TV has been the best a/v product purchase I have ever made. DLP will continue to be the leader in picture quality and price from here on.”

“I bought this TV in June 2005. I have not had any problems with it and the picture quality in HD is awesome. This TV is powered up an average of 6+ hours every day and the bulb is still bright and again never had a problem. Like other reviewers noted the DVI and HDMI inputs are nice to have, the picture quality is very good, it has a bright display, but on the downside the unit is heavy and would need at least two people to move safely and it doesn’t support 1080p, which at the time of purchase was pricey and not widely available. Overall I am very happy with the TV and would highly recommend it based on my experience.”

“This TV is excellent and the display is crisp and vibrant. I do not understand why anyone really cares about the number of HDMI connections since you can easily add a cheap amplifier or a receiver with multiple HDMI inputs. Sound quality is also excellent on this TV as it has SRS surround sound.

I bought this LCD TV for an excellent price and I’m glad I didn’t waste my money on the “more MHZ is better” myth. I went to the store to check out the 120mhz and 240mhz TVs and I didn’t see one bit of difference. Save yourself a lof of money and buy yourself an older 60mhz model. It looks just as good.

The antenna is also the same as almost every TV out there. I have several LCD TVs from several different brands and the antenna reception is exactly the same. Buy this TV today, but be sure and wait for a deal because you can easily get this TV for under $700.”

The only negative is the number of HDMI ports ( only 2) , but again we can get HDMI splitter for cheap.

“I needed a new TV for the client reception and waiting area of my office, where waiting clients sit about 10 feet from the TV. I wanted something LCD 46 to 52 inches in size, for 10 foot away viewing, yet not too heavy. This one caught my attention because it is a name brand (Samsung), right size (46)and is 63 pounds with stand. I give this TV 4 stars after 3 weeks. It has been a great TV for the price (less than $1000). I also liked the fact it comes with both digital and analog tuners, because our security system cameras broadcast on the old analog channel 19 and when I want to check them I can simply switch to analog channel 19 from the now standard digital channels. This TV worked great right out of the box, was well packed and promptly shipped, although I have played some with the picture settings to suit my personal preferences. My biggest concern when I got this thing was that the base plate for the base is made out of glass, but the glass plate appears very strong and has held up well. Of course if you intend to wall mount the unit that is irrelevant. Another concern was that the speakers actually face down and not towards you as you watch the TV. But the sound has been plenty adequate at the 40 to 55 settings (0 to 100 is the scale) for my office. Of course there are jacks on the back for hooking up external speakers if you are one that likes to blast the sound.

Picture quality is very very good when viewing HD content, and above average I think for non-HD digital content. Picture quality has also been great for standard DVDs (I have not used Blu-Ray). The TV offers 3 viewing modes, which are Dynamic, Standard and Movie. Dynamic is best for when you are watching in a well lighted room, Standard otherwise, and Movie for when watching in a darker room with few or no light sources. Viewing mode is easily controlled by the remote, which has worked perfectly I might add. I have reset the Standard mode to suit my personal tastes, which is Backlight at 7 (0-10), Contrast at 90, Brightness at 50, Sharpness at 70, Tint at G50/R50. This gives what I consider the best picture in Standard viewing mode when HD content is on. I would caution however that although almost all content these days is digital, not all content is HD. You will notice a lower quality of picture for ordinary digital versus HD, but that has to do with the quality of the content, not the TV that displays it.

Bottom line is I give 4 stars. Reason for not 5 is that this is a standard 60 Hz TV, not 120 Hz or 240 Hz. If you intend to watch a lot of fast paced sports or play video games I would recommend you pay out the additional few hundreds of dollars to get a higher Hertz rating. Had this been a 120 Hz model I would have given 5 stars. Very happy nevertheless and fit my needs well at a very reasonable price. 4 stars”

“Unless you have to have the top of the line TV with internet connectivity and all, this TV is great! 60hz works just fine. If you read any review on CNET or anywhere else, the difference between 60hz and 120hz is not even noticeable. Think about it…if cameras only record at 30fps or 60fps…how could a screen refreshrate double that even do anything? It would just refresh the same image twice. Anyway, this samsung 550 is great. “

“Since this is our first HD TV, I put a lot of time and energy into researching what TV would be the best for our budget. I had managed to scrap together around $1,400 and wanted to get the most that I could for within $100 of that price range.

I kicked a lot of tires in October/November of 2009, debating between buying this Samsung, which was top of its class at the beginning of the year or jumping in to the emerging LED market. A friend who runs a home theater installation company gave me the thumbs up on the B750, but also said that I should also check out the Samsung UN46B6000 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV.

The B6000 is 120 Hz versus the 240 Hz for the B750 - and after viewing them side by side, I fully believe that the B750 has better image processing for live-action sports. The B6000 simply wasn’t as smooth and had dropout in comparison.

I got the B750 from a vendor local in SF, and the picture looked a little odd out of the box. The contrast was set way too high, making most shows look fake and staged. I found some image configuration & calibration setups I online, and have loved the picture ever since. We got it just in time for the fall football season, and love it.

Watching one game on the NFL Network I thought the screen looked cluttered and noisy - until I realized it was footprints in the turf that I was seeing so clearly. Bluray Discs look incredible, PS3 games are insane, and HD programming is gorgeous. These are on sale now for amazing prices, and your money is better spent on this than the B6000 - with the money you save you can get a PS3 slim - the best damn Bluray player on the market.”

“I was debating between this and the XBR9 and I’m glad I got this TV. Not only is it $200 cheaper, but the B750 is just better in every way. Colors are brighter/warmer than the XBR9, the 240hz makes watching sports a dream, and even playing video games is not as bad as people make it out to be. I didn’t have any quality control issues, everything worked out of the box and it was easy to setup. People complain about the sound, but honestly it’s not that bad, it’s only bad because the picture is so awesome you wish you had the sound system to go with it.”

“I have had this Samsung 46 inch HDTV for just a little over a month. It is absolutely great! The delivery service took it out of the box, attached the stand and plugged it in. They did not hook it up to the HD satellite box, but thats ok, I wanted to do it myself. It was very easy to set up and configure.

It does not come with an HDMI cable, which you will need in order to realize the full potential of this TV. Don’t just buy any old HDMI cable though. Make sure the package says it supports 1080P resolution and 240hz refresh rate. I got an excellent cable at Wally World for $34.00. (Sony)

“This was my 2nd LCD tv purchase. My first TV was a 32″ Samsung purchased in 2006. I decided to upgrade in 2007 from 32″ to 46″ because 32″ was too small for the living room. After 2 years of use, I can say this TV has been great and provided us with many hours of entertainment.

If you are shopping for TVs now (2009) and run across this TV at a really good deal, pick one up. Some advantages to current models is that the standard HDMI inputs are 3-4 whereas this model has only 2. I only use 1 input since I channel everything through a reciever anyways. The newer models are also 10-20 lbs lighter (and even more if you are buying an LED). Lastly, the new models may provide a little better contrast ratio. If buying a used TV, you need to find out how many hours of use the TV has been through and check the condition.

In today’s market, the top competitors in the LCD market seem to be Samsung and Sony. Other companies like Pioneer, Toshiba, Visio, and Panasonic also have a considerable market share, but Samsung and Sony lead the way in sales due to excellent picture and competitive pricing. Comparing Sony and Samsung, Samsung seems to provide more vivid colors while Sony’s colors are more natural and less vivid. As far as which TV is better, it’s a matter of preference. I picked a Samsung because it was at a lower price-point than the Sony I wanted (Z-Line).

My next upgrade (52″ 120hz) will probably be the same (based on prices/deals at the time). I would not hesitate to buy another Samsung.”

Single-tuner Picture in Picture
This HDTV has a picture-in-picture feature, but it only has a single tuner which does not allow POP to function n the same mode. For example, you can’t watch one TV channel in the main screen and another channel in the PIP screen. You can watch a tv channel in one screen and view contnet from your computer or a DVD in another. This tends to be the functional limitation of PIP in most HDTVs currently available.

“There’s no contest, and it’s a crying shame that these sets are a fast dying breed. 1080p, 120hz, HDMI 1.3 support, and an inherently faster refresh rate than ANY LCD panel produced and you’ve got by far and beyond the absolute best HDTV to reproduce any blu-ray that exists.

Having seen blu-ray on 120hz LCDs, I quickly developed a distaste for the image which due to the problems inherent in digital displays, the look and feel of film had completely disappeared. Pirates of The Carribean: At World’s End, looked like it was shot with a nice HD Camera and forgot to undergo the post production processing that makes it film.

However, when it comes to watching HD Video (like HD off-air broadcasts or HD Satellite TV) this set is no slouch. Watching college football on ESPN or CBS will make you cry and almost forget about buying season tickets. The color palette is incredible and the blacks are BLACK, not dark gray or charcoal.

For reference sake, I’m using a Dishnetwork ViP 211 HD Satellite receiver, a Pioneer BDP-51FD Blu-Ray player (best you can by for under $1000, I promise you) and both are jacked in with Accell Ultra Pro AV 2m HDMI 1.3 cables, capable of slinging 10.2 Gbits per second, just like the Monster Cable 1000 HDMI cables for 3 times the price.”
