“I bought this samsung DLP tv refurbished from secondact.com for 799 plus shipping. First impressions were that the picture through my xbox was beautiful (switched from crappy old 36 in sdtv). I can actually read the words on my games now

The second day I realized that I had the problem that a lot of people had. The screen was bowed or pincussioned… not sure which one. If there’s a perfect horizontal line on the screen, when it gets to either the left or right edge it goes up, creating a kind of smile shaped effect. I was immediately beside myself as I had just spent quite a bit of money on this tv.

The tv has a 90 day warranty from samsung so I began by calling their customer support. I called and got through to an easy to understand American representative very quickly and explained my problem. Even though it’s refurbished all i had to do was fax in my receipt and tomorrow I will be calling to set up an appointment for a technician to come directly to my house to fix this problem. I will update this after the tech comes to see what happens but the customer support from samsung was amazing and I love that i don’t have to ship out my tv somewhere and not get it back for a month as other manufacturers might.

If that gets fixed perfectly the only thing wrong with this tv is the audio. If turned up to normal to high-normal listening range it has a definite buzz, which the technician may also fix when he gets here. This isn’t a huge deal to me because for the price i payed i wasn’t looking for great audio without getting outside speakers anyways.

If on a budget this is a great tv to get as i see it!

My only gripes are that shadows or dark areas of subjects on the screen tend to black out instead of shadow, the other is that is has a lamp instead of LED, but hey, at $999 it still earns 5 stars. Other than that the picture is AMAZING. The TV has a slim bevel which is VERY nice, color is vibrant and very sharp. The TV’s light engine is not noisy at all. High def signals (from Xbox360 or satellite box) looks so incredibly crisp. The TV does not have the bowing issue I have read about. ”

A 15-watts-per-channel (x2) audio system with a pair of 2-way speakers comes with built-in SRS TruSurround XT, which simulates compelling surround sound through any stereo playback system, including headphones and the TV’s speakers.

“This TV is absolutely wonderful as you may have noticed from other reviews. I have had this for about 1 year and have had no problems. The fan is so quiet and the picture quality in HD and black levels are great. I have an XBOX 360 hooked up with a component inputs and the games look spectacular. Coupled with an elegant stand, it really makes the living room. One other bonus is the DVI and HDMI inputs for true digital picture and sound from higher end DVD and HD boxes, and input of computers. Surfing the internet on 50″ couldn’t be more fun.

Downsides I would say are the heftiness of moving this TV and sound inputs. Find a good spot and leave it there as it does have a glass bottom for the stand. It could use some digital sound inputs as well such as optical or coaxial.

Other than that all you do is plug it in and go. It looks perfect right out of the box. It does not produce much heat at all which is also a benefit if you have it in a smaller room with many other a/v products attached.

This TV has been the best a/v product purchase I have ever made. DLP will continue to be the leader in picture quality and price from here on.”

“I bought this TV in June 2005. I have not had any problems with it and the picture quality in HD is awesome. This TV is powered up an average of 6+ hours every day and the bulb is still bright and again never had a problem. Like other reviewers noted the DVI and HDMI inputs are nice to have, the picture quality is very good, it has a bright display, but on the downside the unit is heavy and would need at least two people to move safely and it doesn’t support 1080p, which at the time of purchase was pricey and not widely available. Overall I am very happy with the TV and would highly recommend it based on my experience.”

Reviews by R. Toro .. “After contemplating the decision to replace my 32″ HD Toshiba tube TV for over a year, this Sharp TV went on-sale for Black Friday and I couldn’t pass up the bargain.

I had and have done a TON of research on LCD TVs and I would always end up not buying one due to the prevalence of the “next year’s model will be even better” mentality that the manufacturers continue to push.

Well, I can tell you that while this TV may not be some top-of-the-line Sony or Pioneer, the picture is quite frankly fantastic.

I truly believe that we have entered the realm that audio equipment exist in within the TV product space, there’s plenty of ultra high-end audio gear out there that costs 10 times as much as the consumer stuff, but most people don’t care to may such a premium for little additional value.

So, my point is that while this TV doesn’t have the fastest refresh time, best contrast ratio, or 120Hz technology that competing TVs have I have yet to be anything but impressed with the performance. I will also say that since the cable and satellite companies compress the heck out of their signals the TV will not be the deciding factor for quality of the picture most of the time.

I did also purchase a Blu-ray player to use with the TV. As of this writing I have not played Blu-ray disc, but I have played many regular DVDs which are up-converted to 1080p with great results.

What I like about this TV is that each input can be tuned independently for all picture settings(I used the THX tuner for my Blu-ray input), and there are a TON of settings. The dynamic backlighting works perfectly and when it adjusts it will show you the adjustment via a series of leaf icons; this tells you how bright the backlight is being set to.
Also, being able to custom name all of the inputs as well as skip the ones that aren’t connected is great.

Audio-wise, the sound is fine. I use a 5.1 surround system for all DVD/Blu-ray movies and when we are watching a movie on cable, but for standard programming the sound is fine. It probably can use more bass, but where the heck are you going to fit a cone and magnet in this thing?

Finally, the dimensions of the TV are listed somewhat incorrectly as the set is only maybe 6 inches deep, but the stand is 12 inches in depth. I was also surprised at how light the panel itself is - I’ve hung plasmas that were only 42″ and they weighed a ton… this set is very light from a weight perspective.

Ultimately, I couldn’t be happier with this TV and with the $500 or more dollars I saved compared to similar sets I was able to buy a great Blu-ray player and cables plus still have cash left over. ”
