“I bought this television after doing some pretty extensive research. I had almost decided on a Samsung, but after going to the store and looking at some of them, I decided that the Samsungs were way too glossy for my taste. I saw the 40″ version of this television on display at a store, and it looked fantastic. Very sharp picture, not glossy. The power saving features and having seen how good it looks in person got me very close to a decision, and the final piece of the puzzle was that it would fit on the stand I already have. That might sound silly, but it’s another $200-$300 for a decent stand. My stand is 20″ wide, and has about an 3/4″ lip on the edge. The stand on the Sony is about 18″ wide, and lifts the TV up over the lip, so it worked out quite nicely.

The service from Amazon was great on this. The free scheduled delivery worked out great. The company that delivered it (CEVA, I beleive) showed up early, and carried it up the stairs to the third floor for me. They offered to unpack it, which I declined, wanting to do it myself to make sure I could save the box for moving purposes.

It took me about 30 minutes to get the TV unpacked, the stand attached, and the TV up and running. Keep in mind, I was doing this by myself…it would have been quicker with a helper.

The picture on this TV is simply awesome! I watched The Descent on Blu-ray as my first movie, mainly because it’s a very dark movie, and I wanted to see what the black levels were like. The Sony did not disappoint. Most of the movie is set in dark caves, and most of the time, I couldn’t even see the edge between the dark movie and the edge of the letterbox.

The only bit of weirdness I’ve had, was at the very beginning of the movie, there’s a white water rafting scene that looked very strange to me at first. It turns out it was because the director of the movie had been using camera movement for dramatic effect, and the MotionFlow technology was canceling it out! It was easily fixed just by turning off MotionFlow. I plan on leaving it off, as I have noticed no blurring issues even with it off.

The only thing a wee bit lacking on this TV is the sound, but it’s not horrible, and honestly, if you’re willing to shell out the cash for this TV, then you should be willing to shell out for a good sound system too. Overall, I highly recommend this TV.”

“So far, my experience with Sony’s KDL-46V4100 has been very good. Picture is excellent, after about 4 months I have had no problems.

The only dilemma I had was user error - at first I had some older DVD players which would not function on the Composite input to the TV. I finally had Sony service come out to show me that my older players, even though they had composite output, were not compatible with this television (duh). But, I had one newer player than worked just fine. Service could have charged me $100 for the visit, but they didn’t, the technician was patient with my ignorance.

So I would rate my local service provider for Sony very highly. Quite a shocker.”

“I reseached HD TVs and narrowed it down to Samasung or Sony 42 - 46 LCD for my living room. I did not like the glossy Samsung Screen but liked vivid color in the store.

I chose Sony because Best Buy had and awesome deal (I believe December 5th). I got a Sony kdl46v5100 TV, Sony PS3, Blue Ray Movie and PS3 game for $950 and 4 yr extended waranty for under $200.

The color was excellent and 120Hz is a lot better than 60HZ models

Digital tuner works great with indoor Terk antenna ( I live in a hilly, wooded, remote area).

Blue Ray movies and PS3 games picture quality is amazing in all lighting situations.

I bought a Panasonic HD digital camcorder that shoots in Cinema mode and the play back quality using HDMI cable to this TV is amazing compared to standard LCD TV a few years older!

Reviews by Mako … “I bought this set from a local dealer. I’ve been looking at the new 240Hz sets along with the more common 120Hz. Mitsubishi seems more or less disinterested in the numbers game, as they aren’t emphasizing the refresh rate (120Hz), contrast ratio, or other specs that seem to dominate LCD TV marketing. Although the specs can tell you much about a display, the proof is in the actual viewing experience. That’s where this model really impressed me.

Using the ‘Natural’ display preset actually produces a very natural image in color, contrast and brightness. The color balance is excellent. Color gradients are flawless, with no visible banding. The picture is incredibly sharp - given the right source. This set really shows its quality with Blu-ray video; detail is fantastic and motion is smooth with no visible blurring. This is also true of sports broadcasts in HD.

Mitsubishi emphasizes the integrated surround sound system on their web site. It’s a nice feature if you don’t have a separate surround sound amp. However, if you hope to get the surround effect, take a look at the diagrams in the online version of the owner’s manual. (It’s more complete than the printed one.) Since my room isn’t rectangular, I couldn’t really test the ’sound projection’ capabilities. You can connect and external sub-woofer too, which I did not attempt.

Connectivity is good, with 4 HDMI inputs, and two component/composite inputs. A USB port is a nice feature, as you can connect a flash drive or other storage device, and play back digital files directly. (I haven’t had a chance to test this thoroughly yet.) A digital audio output should come in handy for routing audio back to my surround sound receiver from the antenna input.

The design is understated, with an all black cabinet. The logos aren’t huge, and they don’t light up or anything. I particularly like the narrow (less than 1″) bezel. On the stand, I have just enough room for my center speaker, which is about 4.5″ high, to sit in front of the set. I’m still getting accustomed to the glossy screen, and was a bit wary of it before I made my purchase. My viewing room has a large window opposite the TV, and the reflection is a problem. However, the nature of a matte finish screen tends to reduce the sharpness of the image, so I opted for a better picture.

The remote is ‘activity based’ and capable of controlling other devices through the usual code entry, or via HDMI control of CEC devices. The button array is pretty basic, so you may end up using a different universal remote, or individual remotes. I haven’t programmed the included remote, as I use a Logitech Harmony One instead.

This TV doesn’t have some of the ‘features’ other manufacturers are throwing in these days. But honestly, I don’t need network connectivity, kid’s features or recipes on my TV. The Energy Star rating is another plus, and something that’s becoming fairly common. If you’re looking for a high-quality LCD TV that you’ll enjoy for years, take a look at this unit. I find it to be truly impressive.”

Reviews by Horace … “When this model first came out over a year ago I dreamed about owning it. At the time it was selling for nearly three thousand dollars, which was significantly more than I wanted to pay for “another TV”. The feature set was amazing and the spec were literally second to none - That includes Pioneer. After a year of continuous shopping the price for this TV dropped to twelve-hundred dollars on Amazon. that was less than the average Vizio. Looking at what they did to the newer models I doubt the good times will ever be back again.

1. The 850U model includes a Studio reference mode which is infinitely configurable. Few Plasma TV’s have this capability accept for the highest end models. To get this capability on the latest Panasonic models cost thousands more.

2. The 850U comes with an SDHC video card reader. This is huge. I plan on buying one of the latest HD camcorders which all output to the latest AVCHD format. Panasonic is the only manufacturer doing this, and the new models don’t offer this feature until you pay thousands more.

3. The 850U may be an energy hog, but i think all things are relative here. For me it may amount to another 1-2 dollars per month, despite being half as efficient as the newer models. On the up side, the older models look richer and can be turned up as bright as necessary. This is very important in bright rooms that have alot of reflection. The over-heating discussion is bogus. My TV is in an enclosed cabinet (with venting slits in the back) and it barely gets warm. Absolutely no big deal at all. In fact it emits less heat than my Pioneer that’s only 42″.

4. The picture quality on this set is much better than my Samsung that is also 46″ (LN-T4665F). The off angle viewing on the Panasonic is fantastic. There is no fading or distortion at all on the Panasonic. The screen is perfectly uniform. The samsung is way too faded from the same off-angle viewing positions. I will say that the blacks are about the same, but the overall color saturation on the Panasonic is much better.

5. All the little things like quickly getting to the proper input mode, back lighting for the remote, and saving settings are all much better on the Panasonic. Also, I LOVE THE FACT THAT PANASONIC HAS A FRONT PANEL SLOT FOR INPUTS AND ATTACHMENTS AND NOT THE SIDE OR BACK OF THE SET. my cabinet is 47 inches wide. I can’t insert anything on the Pioneer or Samsung because of this problem. twisting the sets all the way around to reach the back (in darkness) is too problematic. panasonic reolved this problem (huge benefit). I now have wall mounted the Samsung and the problem still exist. By the time you swing the TV 2.5 feet away from the wall the power chord and HDMI chord diconnect, because they are not long enough.

6. The Viera Cast is cool, particularly if they beef up the content in the future. Watching UTube on full screen is different. better to have it than not have it.

7. The single pane of glass makes this one of the nicest looking TVs on the market - no joke. I actually don’t think I noticed how thin the facing bezel is until I hung it on the wall. It looks great off - like a work of art.

8. Its now discontinued, but for the feature set and price, it has all the bells and whistles of the plasma’s that cost much more money. panasonics vision now is to find a way to make the energy efficient models look as rich as the energy hogs, which is going to drive the price much highr. No need to pay for their R&D when the set is not going to look any better on the screen. The other thing Panasonic wants you to pay for is the side thickness (from 4 inches to 1 inch). Admittedly it looks cool (only from the side), but you will pay more money to get the same features in a smaller case. The picture is not better, but the thickness is thinner. Again the cost is much higher. ”

“I had originally planned to get a Panasonic plasma 50 inch. I had 3 sony’s before and all had great pictures and i didn’t want risk getting less quality. In came the46 XBR. I bought it as a floor model and saved a ton of money. I hooked it up in 10 minutes. The picture at first was great but it was very dim. I called sony the next day and they said to turn off the light sensor. POW. The picture went from great to incredible.

“Picture quality and color quality is fantastic. This is our first LCD flat screen TV. We had a 28 inch CRT for 20+ years… We are still blown away with the colors. We initially planned on a 40-42 inch, now that we have the 46 we are not disappointed, ..50?55?..hmmm No more room actually on our new TV console.

Sound quality leaves a bit to be desired. The speakers are just to small to have any quality sound. We have a stereo system that we may have to incorporate with the TV watching.

The one feature I was initially disappointed with was the lack of USB port recognition with a flash drive. Sony claims not all USB devices will work and recommends the SONY Micro Vault Flash drive to be compatible. Well after doing some web searching I did find some helpful info on the Sony eSupport page. After learning the USB device must be FAT32 formatted I now can upload photographs (.jpg files) from even the least expensive flash drive. I just re-formatted a SanDisk 250MB flashdrive and then a “micro center” 2GB flash drive I got for free!. After re-formatting to FAT32 the SONY recognizes the drive and I can now view my collection of digital photos. I must add that when viewing good quality .jpg’s (2-3meg size) the SONY displays the pics as sharp as a tack!!..the shots look the best I’ve ever seen. The colors are so real looking you feel as though you could touch the object as in real life. Now I can pursue getting my 1000+ 35mm slides from Germany and England while in the service (40 years ago!) converted to .jpg files. What better way to show all the slides as compared to to old slide projector/screen method…so archaic!

I did learn as well at the eSupport Site there is a software update available for the set. I’ll be contacting Sony soon to verify if our set needs the update as we just purchased the TV 2 weeks ago.

Tip: Get the Support Belt Kit, Part #X21866021, to secure it to your console. You don’t want this massive set to inadvertently topple over. Would recommend this set…the Sony’s all outperformed other LCD’s we looked at as far as color quality. At least that was my wife’s opinion..she has a better eye for color I have to admit. Enjoy, Jack”
